Rosecrans having advanced the “Army of the Cumberland” into Northwestern Georgia, was attacked by the Rebel army in overwhelming numbers, under Bragg, Longstreet and others. – But the glorious fighting of Genl. Thomas’ Division saved the day, completely shattering Longstreets’ famous Corps, and so effectually checking the whole Rebel Army by nightfall on Sunday the 20

that Genl. Rosecrans was enabled to fall back in safety on Chattanooga, thus foiling the Rebels in obtaining possession of that strong hold
