    This is a genuine United States postage stamp commemorating Smokey Bear (often called Smokey the Bear), a fictional advertising mascot created by the U.S. Forest Service and the Ad Council to educate the public about the dangers of forest fires in 1944. The living symbol of Smokey Bear was an American black bear cub that was rescued in 1950 from the Capitan Gap Fire in the Lincoln National Forest, New Mexico.
