Description
This is an authentic Shiprock Yei Navajo rug, (collector quality) circa 1910-1930's. All hand carded & spun of 100% sheep wool with natural and aniline dyes. The natural dyes are made by the weavers from local plants, berries and nut shells to achieve the wanted colors. The Yei design depicts the Holy Peopledrawn from ceremonial sand paintings but does not recreate the entire painting.
They are always facing the viewer, not to be confused with a Yei Bi Chei where the weaving depicts a ceremony or dance.
Two distinct patterns of Yeis and Yeibechais emerged in the 1920s. Those made in the area of Shiprock, New Mexico with lighter colored backgrounds and no border, and those made in the central part of the reservation, in northeastern Arizona, which have darker backgrounds and simple borders.
Measures 54" x 39"
Excellent condition - as you can see from the photos the rug is not faded on the front or back - from smoke free environment
The top of the rug has the corner tassle strings and the bottom does not.
