Comments:
Child's blankets were originally small versions of full sized shoulder blankets woven during the Late Classic Period for trade with the cavalry officers stationed in the southwest and later traded through traders and posts to collectors. Germantown trade yarn was used by some of the best weavers to make intricate and colorful weavings during a time period when the Churro and later the Merrino sheep were being reintroduced and built up on the reservation following the scorched earth campaign against the Navajo by US military that limited sheep for large areas of the reservation. These intricate and colorful weavings, thinner and finer than the Navajo homespun pieces are traditionally displayed on the wall, on table tops (sometimes under pottery), draped over railings and the like but are never used on the floor nor walked on.
