    Culture/Tribe: Navajo / Dineh

Materials: Woven of rare early 4-ply Germantown trade yarn used c.1875-1900 era when parts of the reservation were without sheep wool (following Navajo Long Walk and scorched earth campaign by US govt when the sheep were killed) for weaving rugs. The better weavers in the affected areas could afford to buy expensive Germantown trade yarn but went back to homespun wool when the sheep flocks were re-established. The commercial yarn was spun very tightly and the thin colorful weavings are especially popular as wall hangings and table top weavings and these Germantown textiles should never be used on the floor.
Description: Serrated vertical columns of alternating colors of red, deep blue, gold ,tan/peach, white with four partial crosses as side elements and decorative fringe added by weaver after blanket was completed in red, white, and two shades of blue.
